Youth Particpates in Great Human Race
Seven year-old. Logan Holick of La Crete was one of 2500 participants in the
Great Human Race held in Edmonton on May 6, 2006.
The Great Human Race is a 3km walk or 8km run organized by the United Way of
Canada to support over 200 nonprofit organizations.
“The participants each get to choose their organization to sponsor,” says
Barbe Holick, Logan's mother “and Logan chose to support the Northern Alberta
Brain Injury Society.”
The Great Human Race provides the infrastructure and expertise empowering
community agencies to generate vital funding. United Way administers all of the
logistics of the race to ensure that participation is simple and effective for
the groups in involved.
In 2005 more than 12,000 donors, 1500 participants, 300 community agencies and
l30 volunteers came together in the largest collaborative fundraising effort in
the Region. The race generated more than $250,000. Over the last 5 years the
Great Human Race has generated more than $1.2 million to the community.
Logan chose to support the Northern Alberta Brain Injury Society (NABIS) because
of his own injury and to raise money for NABIS programs in La Crete.
“Logan suffered a brain injury after a bicycle accident.” says Barb “He
lost control of a bicycle going down a hill and even though he was wearing a
helmet the impact of the fall caused some damage.
Barbe explains that Logan raised $120. “More importantly Logan learned that he
can overcome any obstacles that may be in his path and brain injury or not he
can accomplish whatever he chooses to do.”
Logan met his hero and mentor Logan Beaulieu who has also overcome adversity and
suffered life challenges.
“Beaulieu was in a near fatal car crash when he was 16 years old and after he
lingered in a coma for over 16 days” says Barbe “he woke up to find out he
had suffered paralysis on his left side, as well as multiple fractures and was
told he may never walk again and certainly not run.
Barbe explains that Logan met Beaulieu through the Internet and NABIS and
Beaulieu has become an inspiration for Logan.
Beaulieu has become an accomplished and competitive runner, running in many
competitions throughout Alberta and British Columbia.
“It was a great experience for Logan,” says Barbe “he is already talking
about next years run.”
